Ad Spending Erodes Share Just in case your prospects need more proof
that cutting ad spending in an economic downturn leads to long-term
erosion of market share, here's yet another study whose findings
bear out that conclusion---this time from across the Atlantic.
Overall grocery advertising fell by 19 percent in real terms, while
advertising as a whole rose by 9 percent.
What TNS found was that those brands that did best in terms of market
share were the ones that cut their ad spending the least.
The study also found that since 1997, premium grocery brands have
tended to cut their advertising expenditures more heavily than tertiary
brands have.

The most recent comprehensive survey
of the Salt Lake Primary Market area (Salt Lake and southern Davis
counties) found that, on average, a daily copy of The Salt Lake
Tribune or Deseret News is read by 2.5 adults.
Newspaper advertising does not disappear into the airwaves or
get discarded after one exposure, but is passed on from one family
member or office worker to another.
The standard audience measurement for the newspaper industry is
the "average-issue" readership figure, defined as adults
who report reading the weekday paper on the day preceding the
interview, or the Sunday paper on the Sunday preceding the interview.
