Following in this American heritage, these same tools are used today by Sally Claus Focht to carve distinctive signage for residential or commercial use.
After the design is applied to the sign face, the lettering, numerals or added decorations are hand carved and the sign then receives several coats of exterior primer to seal out all moisture.

A piece of this poplar is made by gluing several 8" to 24" scraps together to create a board 8' long.
The joints are called finger-jointed because each end of each scrap is routed to look like fingers.
