quarter of the nineteenth century.
Advertising agencies were relatively unknown then, and those that
existed had ill-defined responsibilities.
During the past century, large American manufacturers have played
a leading role in developing this craft, but in earlier years, leadership
in terms of design and creativity lay elsewhere.
Modern advertising really began in the 1880s, when new methods of
manufacturing led to greatly increased output and decreased costs
for the producers of consumer goods.
Research at agencies dates back at least to 1879, when Ayer undertook
its first such project.
Since then agencies, their clients, and independent market research
firms - often assisted by marketing academicians and economists
- have spent large sums to determine advertising's effectiveness.

Welcome to The History of Advertising Trust Archive The History
of Advertising Trust (HAT Archive) was established in the UK in
1974 by a small group of individuals who believed that the best
of UK advertising should be preserved for posterity.
Our charitable activities are supported by researching, archiving
and digitising for commercial clients and by selling our publications.
I have mentioned this before and had a couple of letters about it
published in Campaign, because we need the active help of agencies
and clients both to keep our collection/ record up-to-date with
new material and to furnish us with any agency/client policies,
past and present, regarding the portrayal of ethnic minorities in
ads.
